Late vs. Early Fuel Filter Type

Between 2005 and 2010 Volkswagen used two different fuel filter types, and it can be hard to tell via VIN which filter is in your car.  The easiest way is find which filter you have is to look under the hood at the filter cartridge shape.

The two filter designs we call "Early" and "Late". There are two different VW part numbers that correspond to the two designs.

EARLY: 1K0127434A (sometimes the "A" is omitted)

LATE: 1K0127434B

Today we’re going to show you how to determine what fuel filter type you have. In 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010, VW used two different style fuel filters in the Jetta TDI and the Sportwagen TDI. We’ll show you how to tell which type you have.

First step is to open the hood. Fuel filter is on the left side in a black canister with a grey top. This 2010 Sportwagen has the late style filter. I know that because it has rounded edges on the front and the back. The earlier style has 5 individual tabs for each screw.
